Kiosk Marketplace editor reviews 39 kiosk companies at National Restaurant Show | 2019 National Restaurant Show

Laura Miller of Kioware and Devin Van Marcke of Howard Technology Solutions present a self-serve QSR kiosk with new accessibility features.. The self-service drumbeat rattled Chicago’s McCormick Place last week as attendees swarmed exhibits promising faster customer service. This year’s National Restaurant Show showcased even more interactive kiosks (39 exhibitors) than last year’s record-breaking 36 exhibitors. Less than a third of this year’s companies (11 exhibitors) were repeats from last year, indicating the market continues to attract new interest. Kiosk hardware and software manufacturers have heeded the call from restaurants looking to automate the customer order to deliver a more satisfying guest experience, boost sales and make more efficient use of store labor. And while established kiosk providers were once again well represented on the trade show floor, restaurant POS software companies have also entered the fray in a big way. Once again, many of the kiosks on display integrate with other front-of-the-house and back-of-the-house touchpoints, such as online ordering, mobile ordering, loyalty rewards, customer messaging, order delivery, ingredi...

To my thinking, any TV you buy today should have either Amazon Fire TV or Roku

To my thinking, any TV you buy today should have either Amazon Fire TV or Roku built in. Thankfully, you don’t have to pay a premium for those awesome “smart” interfaces. Proof positive: Today only, and while supplies last, Best Buy once again has the Insignia 32-inch LED TV with built-in Fire TV for just $99.99 (plus tax). That’s $70 off the regular price, and a repeat of a sale from about a month ago. So, Fire TV or Roku? The latter gets more attention these days, but Fire TV is arguably just as good and may be even better. It affords most of the same streaming apps: Netflix, Hulu, HBO and so on. (Alas, if you want YouTube, you have to access it via a web-browser app.) And it comes with an Alexa-enabled remote, so you can bark orders at the TV. Fire TV also affords access to various Alexa skills and a huge library of Amazon apps. For example, you could play the excellent party game Quiplash — something Roku can’t do.   There’s a built-in tuner should you wish to connect an antenna, and three HDMI inputs for things like cable boxes and game consoles. Here’s the only real hedge: The TV tops out at 720p (that is, 1,366×768-pixe...

TerraCycle joins Suppliers Partnership for the Environment

Collaboration between automakers, suppliers and U.S. EPA. aims to advance sustainability through automotive supply chain. New Jersey-based TerraCycle is joining the Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP), Washington, an association of automakers, their suppliers and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that works to implement programs that advance environmental sustainability. TerraCycle, a recycling company that recycles “hard-to-recycle” materials through innovative programs, will be joining SP at the organization’s second quarter meeting April 23-24 in Indianapolis, Indiana. “We’re proud to welcome TerraCycle to the Supplier Partnership,” SP Program Director Kellen Mahoney remarks. “TerraCycle is a business with an earth-friendly mission that dovetails nicely with the Suppliers Partnership’s sustainability initiatives. We look forward to working with TerraCycle to find new innovative ways to further preserve our natural resources.”  SP was established with the purpose of advancing environmental sustainability through the automotive supply chain, according to a press release. SP functions as a global forum to “meet and address focus issues,” which includes s...

The USDA Changed Pork Inspection Rules—Why Consumer Groups Are Concerned

New regulations allow slaughterhouses to complete certain inspections in-house and increase production. Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture finalized a rule that makes a significant number of regulatory changes at pork slaughterhouses. The agency says that the changes are long overdue, and will modernize an inspection system that hasn’t been updated in more than five decades. But both consumer advocacy organizations and those who advocate for worker safety have expressed concern that the new system could lead to an increase in food contamination and make conditions more dangerous for slaughterhouse employees. As reported by Reuters, the New Swine Slaughter Inspection System (NSIS) will allow companies like Tyson Foods and WH Group’s Smithfield Foods to increase the number of pigs that they slaughter every hour. Those changes will also allow those facilities to train their own employees to sort and remove pigs that have defects—including fecal matter, illnesses, and injuries—before being processed, a task that has previously been done by a federal inspector. The USDA will still inspect each animal both before and after slaughter. “[The USDA's ...

Perovskite Solar Cells: A new paradigm in Photovoltaics

Organic/inorganic lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have received global attention because of their excellent photovoltaic performance and ease of fabrication. PSC’s have reached over 24% power conversion efficiency demonstrating that the lead halide perovskites are the most promising class of materials for next-generation thin-film photovoltaics. The unprecedented increase in the device performance from 3.8% to 24% in less than 10 years is mostly due to compositional engineering of mixed cations, and anions, as well as improved processing protocols has made PSC the fastest development of a new material in the PV field. Though the efficiencies on lab scale are staggering, the full potential of this burgeoning technology cannot be realized without addressing the following challenges: fighting the degradation of the material is the highest focus for the moment and has several fronts for improvements including within larger scale cells or modules. The other main challenge of the new class of material is the toxicity risks due to the presence of lead. The research community is actively working on the mitigation and reduction of the associated risks. The exceptional propertie...

Smartwatches remain a luxury for technophiles, gadgets for people who understand a new bit of technology’s

Smartwatches remain a luxury for technophiles, gadgets for people who understand a new bit of technology’s limitations and problems. As much as the smartwatch has improved even in the past five years, it still isn’t quite ready to find its way onto the wrists of people who expect their technology to just work. That said, for those of you who love watches, technology or the blissful combination of the two, here is a rundown of some of my favorites, what they have going for them and what challenges they face. One important note: Almost the entire slate of today’s fully functioning smartwatches rely on smartphones to deliver robust access to not just a handful of functions, but full apps and games. That means that the smartphone you own will have a big impact on the sort of smartwatch you can get the most out of. The Apple Watch only works with the iPhone, and while the newer Android Wear watches include support for iOS, it’s so limiting in its current state as to be easily dismissed. Only the Pebble Watch has full app support on both platforms. One thing all of these smartwatches have in common is a base level of performance: notifications. Early on, these ...

Is Your 24MP Camera Obsolete? How to Future-Proof Your Photographs

The problem with technology is that it can look dated the older it gets. How good does a VHS tape look on your 4K TV? The same thing can happen with cameras. While 24-megapixel cameras are making great pictures, what they are going to be compared to is about to change… radically. You need to understand how the next generation of digital cameras will affect you, especially if you are a pro or serious amateur. We’ve had a long run with 24MP as a standard acceptable resolution for many photographic needs — it has been a sweet spot of cost and performance. It’s a great fit for full-page and double-page magazine reproduction. Fine art prints look as good, and usually better than, the 35mm and medium format film it replaced. In fact, wedding and portrait size prints have never looked better. And It’s even a good fit for video since HD/1080p screens only need ~2MP (and even 4K tops out at ~8MP.) Amazing work can be made with 24MP cameras, but its dominance has already started to erode. Most pros I work with are regularly using 36-50MP cameras from Nikon/Sony/Canon, and you can see the difference. As a fine art printmaker, I spend a lot of time evaluating print quality up close, and I’m...
