The Nikon Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S is a standard zoom with lens outstanding optical performance and a pro-grade build. Nikon understands that if it wants to get pros excited about its mirrorless system, it needs to have the lenses to match. So it’s no surprise that the Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S ($2,299.95), a must-have lens for most working photographers, is an early entry. Nikon’s most recent take on the design is an exceptional performer, one of the sharpest 24-70mm f/2.8 zooms we’ve seen for any system, but it also comes with a premium price—it’s one of the most expensive lenses of this type on the market. That doesn’t stop it from earning Editors’ Choice marks—it’s the standard zoom you’ll want to pair with your Nikon Z camera for sure. The Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 is around the same size and weight as similar lenses for other systems. It measures 4.9 by 3.5 inches (HD), weighs 1.8 pounds, and supports 82mm front filters. If you prefer a smaller, lighter zoom, the Nikkor Z 24-70mm f...

Valve Index Controllers review: These revolutionary VR controllers need patience to hit full potential

Last month we put out some initial impressions of Valve’s new Index virtual reality headset. I’ve now used it off-and-on in my home for about a month, and the first units are going out to consumers, which means it’s time for a proper review. It’s a bit odd though, reviewing the Index. Valve’s hands-off approach to its hardware, its lead-and-the-developers-will-follow mindset, means the Index’s first few steps into the limelight are more tepid than I would’ve liked. The hardware is great. The software support so far? Less so. The knock-on effect is that at release, the Index headset feels like a great investment, an incremental but significant step forward for those who want the best fidelity money can buy. The so-called “Knuckles” Index Controllers are supposed to be the draw though, and are undercut by the fact few games support them. They may become must-have peripherals eventually, but you’re going to have to take on faith that developers will do the work. This review’s long, and the Index Controllers can also be used with HTC Vive headsets, so I’ve split it in two parts. Keep reading for my impressions on the Index Controllers, or click here to read about the Valve Index hea...

Keeping data flowing for Internet of Things (IoT) management requires robust batteries that can withstand harsh

Keeping data flowing for Internet of Things (IoT) management requires robust batteries that can withstand harsh aerospace environments. Throughout the past few years, there have been several advances in smart manufacturing, smart cities, and automotive all becoming more connected as we move further into the digital age. Aerospace can now be added to that list with airlines investing in connected hardware and services. According to the Honeywell Connected Aircraft Report, the aviation industry will be investing heavily in connected technology during the next few years to reap the cost and efficiency benefits from sensing, collecting, and analyzing real-time data collected by numerous sensors. The report also found that the main challenge faced by the industry was maintenance, where problems frequently cause costly delays and downtime. By embracing connected technologies, the aviation industry will benefit from predictive maintenance, enabling it to use real-time data to improve passenger experience and increase cost efficiency. Predictive maintenance uses historical and real-time data to analyze and predict when failure might happen, rather than wait until something goes wrong. I...

Over 23 days, the beacon was relocated 2,900 feet inland, where it stands today, away from the threat of the encroaching Atlantic. When the lighthouse was completed in 1870, it was 1,500 feet from the ocean. But after a century of tides washing over the island, moving sand from oceanside to soundside, just 120 feet separated it from the surf. In 1980, the National Park Service started planning for long-term protection. The park service began a three-year public input process and in 1987, reached out the National Academy of Sciences, which submitted a report recommending moving the lighthouse as the most cost-effective protection, according to the Park Service. The move was debated for years. Then, in 1996, North Carolina State University reviewed the report and then produced its own, Saving the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse from the Sea, in January 1997, also recommending moving the lighthouse. Funding was appropriated by Congress in fiscal year 1998. In early 1999 before the lighthouse was moved, the principal keeper’s quarters, double keepers’ quarters, oil house, cisterns and sidewalks were relocated, with all the buildings placed in the same relative position as they were origina...

Those Tiny Hotel Toiletry Bottles Are on Their Way Out

In a decade of travel, Robin Brinn accumulated dozens of small toiletry bottles from hotel bathrooms, bringing them home to her New York apartment and storing them in bags. But when she recently moved, she discarded most of them. “I just really wanted to pare down,” said Ms. Brinn, 67, a retired clinical social worker. “I had bags of stuff that I had taken over the years. A couple of things had the name of a lovely hotel on the bottle. But I threw most of it out.” Like Ms. Brinn, many travelers collect the tiny containers as souvenirs or to use when they return home, home organizers say. “It is the rare home that does not have at least a small if not very large collection of hotel bottles,” said Karin Socci, a KonMari practitioner and home organizer at The Serene Home who worked with Ms. Brinn during her relocation. “I can’t tell you how many pounds and pounds of those things I have discarded.” But (ever-so-slightly) lighter suitcases at checkout and less cluttered home closets might be in our future. Like grocery bags and straws, the miniature bottles of toiletries and cosmetics that many guests swipe from hotels are in the sights of legislators and hotel establishments who are...
